The transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) to electric vehicles (EV) is more than just a technological change, according to Arun Roy, IAS, Secretary to Government, Industries, Investment Promotion, and Commerce Department, TN. Speaking at the India EV Conclave in Chennai, Roy highlighted the proactive measures taken by the Tamil Nadu government to promote EV manufacturing but stressed the need to address challenges for a successful transition.

The state's implementation of favourable policies and incentives for companies venturing into EV businesses. However, it was acknowledged that existing technological and policy challenges, emphasizing the importance of generating electricity from clean sources and ensuring job creation during the shift from ICE to EV manufacturing.

As Tamil Nadu targets attracting investments worth Rs 50,000 crore in the EV manufacturing sector, with a projection of creating 1.5 lakh new jobs, the government's focus on job opportunities is making the state an attractive hub for EV manufacturing in Southeast Asia. To foster a robust EV ecosystem, the government has actively welcomed new players like Ather Electric, Ola Electric, Ampere, and others to establish their manufacturing units in Tamil Nadu.

The evolving landscape indicates Tamil Nadu's commitment to navigating the complexities of the EV industry transition. Despite proactive policies, Roy highlighted the pressing need for cleaner energy sources, addressing potential job losses in ICE manufacturing, and streamlining policies for seamless EV integration.

Moreover, these comments come at a crucial juncture as the state aims not only to attract investments but also to position Tamil Nadu as a leader in EV manufacturing. The government's vision extends beyond immediate gains, emphasizing long-term sustainability and growth in the burgeoning EV sector.
